In response to the good reception of Apple’s “Mac vs. PC” advertisements, Microsoft has launched a US$30 million advertising blitz. See, that’s why their operating software is so expensive. We are paying for that. Remember how Microsoft tried to irritate or embarrass users of pirated Microsoft Windows? Well, if they don’t charge that bloody high price, no one would want to use pirated copies, right?

Apple is increasing their market share while Microsoft has retired their popular WinXP OS and pushing sales of Windows Vista, which is not received as well by consumers. I don’t know why because I personally prefer Vista. An original single-user license for Vista is sold here in Malaysia at about MYR500, which is approximately 1/5 of the price of a desktop computer. Isn’t it ridiculous?

Hopefully this OS war will force down the prices of Microsoft Vista. That will convert more illegal users of Microsoft products into legal users, not by threatening us with Blackout Wednesday or something similar.

Do You Knol?

Author: Emily

I read about Google’s answer to Wikipedia called Knol a couple of days ago when they launched it to the public. it’s funny that today, when I wanted to write about it, I went to http://www.knol.com and landed on the website of the REAL KNOL, a website owned by a Dutch company selling steam cleaning equipment.

The REAL Knol

So that’s one down for Google for not owning the domain name! Can you just imagine the surge in traffic for this Dutch site? That’s seriously funny!

Google Knol

Anyway, Knol is supposedly a “unit of knowledge” and what it strives to be is a database of authoritative articles on specific topics. This is for people who do not want to keep blogs, but who would still like to share their knowledge and publish an article online AND earn from AdSense.

People are already reporting that articles on Knol are getting higher search result rankings on Google Search Engine just like Blogger blog posts will get crawled and ranked faster, and this is a conflict of interest.

I foresee Knol replacing blogs for advertising solely for SEO purposes as SEO “experts” churn out knol after knol, you know?
